What is Cosplay Flashback? Cosplay Flashback is a blog series where I’ll revisit my older costumes and discuss how I made them and how I would make them differently if I was making them today. I’ve been cosplaying over 10 years and I’ve learned a lot in that time. It’s fun to go back and revisit older costumes with new knowledge. I hope you enjoy!
Stats
Character: Seto Kaiba
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh
Version: Battle City
Debut: Ushicon 4
Year: 2006
Construction
I made this giant coat out of twill and then I lined it in more twill. I used a commercial pattern that originally had princess seams, but not knowing that commercial patterns add seam allowance I just taped the two pieces together and went with it. The card necklace is made out of an altoids tin.
But Why?
Yu-Gi-Oh was one of the few anime series on cable television at the time, so I watched it and I loved it. I picked Kaiba because I thought he was cool but also because I wanted his coat.
What I Would Do Now?
Where do I even start? I think first and foremost I would wear makeup. This was my first time cosplaying a male character , boys don’t wear makeup so that means I don’t need to right? I’ve come a long long way since then and learned how important even “basic” makeup can be for making your face look smooth and flawless for photos. I haven’t cosplayed a male character in years but I think I would be much better equipped in the makeup department now. Aside from that it would be the construction of the coat. I would have fit it much better, and I probably would have lined it in a more light weight fabric. I also would have tried to draft the shoulders so they were more accurate.
