How long has this costume been sitting in my “want to make” pile? 5 years, 10 years? The point is it’s been in there a while but hey, you cosplay long enough you’re bound to get to it eventually right? Thats a big fat lie but I did get to this.
This costume is fairly simple in terms of construction so most of the challenge was in coordinating patterns and fabrics with my cohorts in corn pottage cosplay. I spear headed the fabric selections and went with stretch materials for comfort and ease of wear. The only piece that doesn’t have some give is the vest.
Most of the pieces used base commercial patterns with slight alterations. While the shorts and apron required minimal adjustments the blouse and vest required more substantial changes. On the shirt I had to add back darts fit it better as it we very baggy. I also added side splits to fit my hips and a zipper to the front to prevent gaping. For the vest I tried really hard to create the illusion of a smaller bust since Chihaya is…not well endowed. This meant that. while it appeared to be an under bust vest it actually sits up on the lower bust line. I also completely changed the shape of the bottom since that was getting tucked into the shorts. It actually closes with a side separating zipper.
Outside of that there were a few accessories like arm cuffs and a tiny hat. I made the hat lining in felt for structure and used hair combs to secure it to the wig. The arm cuffs have a hidden elastic loop to keep them in place on the arm. I just painted a pair of canvas shoes in the skate colors. No real skates…for now. Let me tell you though, the minute a con hosts a cosplay skating rink event I AM THERE.
This is a really comfortable costume to wear and I’m glad to cross something that’s been on my “to do” list so long off.
