This was a quick change costume constructed for the finals of WCS. Because it was created for stage I’ve never had a chance to wear it outside of that one event. This particular version was chosen because it was easy to “piece” out into a skirt and bodice and it would fit underneath the final costume worn in the skit. A few design changes were made to ensure it would work as a quick change costume.
For the general construction of the dress it was made in two separate parts. The top bodice was made and attached to a leotard lining. This was done so that it would not bunch under the final costume. The skirt was constructed with a full opening on one side. The skirt snaps around the bottom of the bodice with snap tape so that it can be quickly removed on stage. A layer of tulle was added into to skirt as well as horse hair to help it keep it’s bell shape without the need of a petticoat. The skirt was lined with a bleached muslin.
All of the purple design work on the dress was done using applique. The pieces were paterend out, cut and then all raw edges were turned under. I used stitch witchery to attach the applique pieces to the dress, then top stitched them down. Since all of the edges of this applique were straight this method worked well.
Finally the gems were added to the front piece with fabritac. The were cast in polyester resin and the backs were painted to give them the correct color.
